Prost!
You may recall or know that prost is “cheers” in German and there’s a good reason why I’m starting a blog post like this.
But October is Oktoberfest month where across the world, small businesses, micro-breweries, pubs and many others celebrate this German traditional event.
Roman Way Brewery has been high on my must-visit list but sadly haven’t had the chance to come until now! Based at the Old Ordnance Depot in Weedon Bec, it’s pretty hidden away so I guess you could call it a hidden gem in Northamptonshire!
They’ve been making beer for a while now and I came to be familiar with their beer when they’ve exhibited at various of food and drink festivals across the county and Josh and I have enjoyed them over the years – so I was thrilled when the team at Roman Way invited me down to their Oktoberfest to fully experience what events are like here.
I missed out big time on all their summer events they had lined up, which I’m gutted about, but it means I’ll definitely make sure I make it one of my top spots to visit next summer!
On offer during the day was plenty of their beers from the brewery, from ales, golden ales and stouts, plus some picked especially for the occasion. You could buy these in pints, though I wish we turned the menu over to see that you could order a taster board, as that would have been something we’d pick so we got a taste of them all!
The atmosphere was lively and it was made even better that the weather was decent – a nice crisp October day, not too cold but the sun was shining and Roman Way made sure there was plenty of cover (in case there was rain) and even had fire pits on to warm everyone.
Whilst Roman Way Brewery were handling the drinks and snacks (very apt having pretzels in bowls on the tables) the food was supplied by vendor The Rub BBQ, who I’ve had the pleasure of trying their burgers before so I knew their German-inspired menu was going to be tasty.
And they delivered!
I went for the Cheese Krakauer Hotdog which was dripping with onions, grada cheese filling and even topped with garlic mayo, ketchup and crispy onions – surprisingly, it kept together without falling apart but it soaked up the beer very nicely!
Josh had the Schnitzel Burger which looked insane and was jam-packed with a pork cutlet, bavarian cheese and curry mayo – after having a bite, I could see how it could become very moreish as we definitely contemplated whether getting another one would be too greedy!
Overall, I wanted to write about this event because this wasn’t your “traditional” Oktoberfest full of costumes, German chants or music, but it was an alternative version that was very laid back, relaxed but not too much for it to be quiet… apparently, the atmosphere picked up after we left!
It’s made us want to return for another event asap!
The brewery itself is small, but you can head inside and purchase an array of their beers, plus other local products such as from Towcester-based gin distillery, Wharf Distillery if you fancy grabbing a gin or rum tipple instead!
Whilst their event schedule is not as jam-packed as it was in the summer, they do have an upcoming comedy night coming up on 28th November and there’s going to be a Christmas Fair at the depot full of lots of local vendors so you can get all your Christmas shopping done!
Does this sound like an event you would have liked to have attended?
